Butterfly Keyboard Failures (2018–2019 Models)

Apple's butterfly keyboard mechanism — used in MacBook (2016–2019), MacBook Air (A1932), and MacBook Pro (A1989, A1990) — was notoriously sensitive to dust, crumbs, and debris. Symptoms include:

• Keys that require excessive force to register
• Keys that repeat characters unexpectedly ("ttttttyping like this")
• Keys that don't register at all
• Keys physically stuck in a depressed position

Liquid Damage to Keyboard

The improved scissor-switch keyboards on MacBook Air (A2179+) and MacBook Pro (A2338+) are more reliable than butterfly designs, but can still fail from liquid ingress, debris, or physical damage. Individual key replacement is sometimes possible; full top-case replacement may be required for widespread damage.

Backlight Failure

Keyboard backlight not working (on models that support it) can indicate a cable fault or controller issue, separate from the key mechanism itself.

1. Diagnosis

We test every key and assess the nature of the failure — mechanical, liquid damage, or logic-level. This determines whether individual key replacement, a keyboard assembly swap, or a full top-case replacement is needed.

2. Cleaning (Liquid Damage Cases)

If liquid damage contributed to the failure, we clean the keyboard and affected components before repair to prevent continued corrosion.

3. Keyboard / Top-Case Replacement

On most MacBook models, the keyboard is integrated into the top case. Replacement involves full top-case swap — keyboard, trackpad, and battery are moved to the new unit. This is more involved than on older models but results in a factory-fresh keyboard feel.

4. Individual Key Replacement (Where Applicable)

On some models, individual keycaps and mechanisms can be replaced without a full keyboard swap. We'll always recommend the least invasive repair that solves the problem.

5. Testing

Every key is tested post-repair, including special keys (Touch ID, function row, backlighting) before we return your MacBook.
